Mahatma Night Degree College of Commerce

Mahatma Night Degree College of Arts & Commerce is permanently affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The college was established in 1986 with the primary objective of providing facilities for higher education for less privileged youth who cannot become full time students at day colleges.

The college is located at Chembur, a central suburb of Mumbai. With a very modest beginning of merely 60 students, today the college has a large student fraternity exceeding 1400 ambitious learners and a galaxy of committed and dedicated teachers of high caliber.

The college runs the three year integrated B.Com. (Regular) Degree Course of the University of Mumbai. Catering to the need of the economically underprivileged students of the local area, who are part time learners, employed during the day, the college has been contributing to the upliftment of the academically and economically challenged section of society by empowering and equipping the first generation learners to become better citizens.

Mahatma Night Degree College of Arts and Commerce has been Accredited by NAAC with a CGPA of 2.89 on a seven point scale at B++ Grade valid for a period of five years from 30th October, 2017. The college is one of the oldest institutions among the 48 institutions under the umbrella of Mahatma Education Society. With the able guidance and leadership of our visionaries Dr. K. M. Vasudevan Pillai, Managing Director – Mahatma Education Society and Dr. Daphne Pillai, Chairperson Management Board of MES, the college has made great strides in their social responsibility contributing to society at large.

Mahatma Night Junior College

Mahatma Night Junior College was established in 1984. This is the first night junior college in Mumbai. It mainly caters to the needs of working (employed) class students.

Mahatma Night Junior College is an aided institution attached to the Mahatma Night Degree College of Arts & Commerce. The Junior College offers Arts & Commerce subjects. There are two divisions of Arts with one division each for 11th and 12th with a total strength of 120 students per division. In Commerce, there are three divisions for 11th and three divisions for 12th with total strength of 600 students.

The students passing out of night schools as well as day schools who wish to pursue their studies at the night college apply to Mahatma Night Junior College. Students who join ITI and other vocational courses also form a good number of the college’s strength. The college offers excellent opportunities to the working students and students from various vernacular media. Here the students are taught right from the basic and their standard of learning and understanding is uplifted from time to time.

The college works in a full fledged manner with experienced teachers handling various subjects. The Vice – Principal of the Night Junior College is Mr. R. S. Dongre. There is a team of 14 part time teachers and clock hour based teachers. Apart from the curriculum, the students are given training in other Co-Curricular, NCC and NSS. Students are also keen in getting trained for athletics and other sports and games. Many students participate in the various extracurricular activities and bring laurels to the institution. This institution is a great source of help to the poor and needy. Our institution allows the students to pay their fees in installments. Those students who are good at studies are given free books and scholarships. The institution provides a good library, a computer room and book bank facilities. The result of the institution has always been encouraging. Many of the students who pass out from the institution take admission in the attached degree college itself. The institution organizes very special days for the students such as cultural day, traditional day, friendship day, teacher’s day, children’s day etc. The active participation of the students in various exhibitions and competitions actually provides them a chance to display their inner talents. Several competitions are also held for arts, music, culture and sports item and the students are offered prizes for the same.

Mission

The mission of our college is “percolation of education to the economically and academically underprivileged and to empower, enlighten and thus equip them to become responsible citizens.” We therefore provide higher education to the students who are unable to attend full time classes being either employed or coming from weaker sections of the society.
